Public Service Announcement

This morning as I woke up I read an article someone had posted to their facebook. It was an Elite Daily article highlighting chivalry to be dead, from a mans perspective. Find it here: http://elitedaily.com/dating/sex/why-chivalry-is-dead-from-a-mans-perspective/

As I read, I agreed with some points he made that "dating" should actually still be dates instead of hooking up.
The article was poorly written, with curse words strewn about while the author is trying to portray a "stand up guy," confusing.

Then I got to toward the end. His conclusion? It's WOMEN who are at fault! Excuse me? He claims that "the real problem here" is that women let it happen. I have been appalled and infuriated with people's perspectives more than once in my life. However, to completely blame a societal shift on one gender alone is absurd.
Has this guy ever heard the phrase, "It takes two to tango?"

He proceeds to say that if he does anything nice he's categorized as a "stage-five-clinger" when he's "not looking for a girlfriend, nor...a wife" ARE YOU KIDDING ME. He wonders where the hooking up comes from?

The author, John Picciuto, wonders if women will one day "wise up and [ask for what they deserve]" but until then "men will get away with putting in the bare minimum."

How is it a woman's fault that men do not treat her right or ultimately only want sex?
I've had a lot of relationships, and I know what some people think of me, and what others might. But I'll tell you right now: THIS IS WHY. Because I stand up for what I believe in and how I want to be treated. So if you don't treat me right, I'm not going to stick around for more hurt. I am a woman who deserves to be respected and does "own the cards" as Picciuto puts it.

To be clear you are more than welcome to enjoy hook-ups as well. You have that right, too. This article is disgusting in more than one way. So, men and women: start stepping up, respecting yourself, respecting a potential partner, and don't settle for less than what you deserve.

When I look behind me at the path I have walked in life I want to see flowers, love, kindness, and truth. I don't want to leave a path of destruction.

What will you be remembered by? How will you be remembered? What impression do you leave on people?

What will your path look like?

The Weight of the World

“A psychologist walked around a room while teaching stress management to an audience. As she raised a glass of water, everyone expected they’d be asked the “half empty or half full” question. Instead, with a smile on her face she inquired, “How heavy is this glass of water?” The answers called out ranged from 8oz to 20 oz. She replied, “The absolute weight doesn’t matter. It depends on how long I hold it. If i hold it for a minute, its not a problem. If i hold it for an hour, i’ll have an ache in my arm. If i hold it for a day, my arm will feel numb and paralyzed. In each case, the weight of the glass doesn’t change, but the longer i hold it, the heavier it becomes.” She continued, “The stress and worries in life are like that glass of water. Think about them for a while and nothing happens. Think about them for a bit longer and they begin to hurt. And if you think about them all day long, you will feel paralyzed - incapable of doing anything.” Always remember to put the glass down.”

Holy shit. The utter truth of this.

Nursing School

Sometimes I wonder why I'm doing what I'm doing. Why I put myself through so much hell, no sleep no social life no free time. It's easy to forget the light at the end of the tunnel when it comes to nursing school. It's like a dark black hole that sucks you in and you're trying not to drown.
It's been the worst semester of my life. My hardest classes, I still hold a position in the sorority, I started dating someone, I can't even remember the last time I went to a party or social event. At least my cats are snuggly, amiright? I've also been sick a lot. So that really doesn't help.

With all that said, I did have my pediatrics clinical this semester. It was wonderful. Such an affirmation of what I want to do with my nursing career.
I had a job interview today at Children's Hospital of Michigan for a student nurse extern position. Basically I would be shadowing and working under a preceptor. It was like finding that light. Now that I have seen it I don't want to forget it or let it go.
I have to finish this last year as my best ever because I owe it to myself. I've worked way too hard to let myself fall behind or fail. I am so exhausted but I need to remind myself of the end reward.

Now I will go write my care plan. Peace.

America the Great?

Sometimes I think it may be because of my travels abroad. I've been to Israel twice and France. However, I recall having a love and respect for the world as a whole at an early age. I remember wanting to see, experience and live in every little nook and cranny of the world because I believed that on order to live my life and think and believe the things that I do; first I must understand the world as a whole.

This prelude leads to my topic of thought today. I understand that the Martin case is extremely complicated and that with the evidence it could go either way. However, to me it's depressing to see Facebook and twitter explode with hateful comments toward Zimmerman/the jury/judge. I'm not saying he's innocent or guilty. I have no way of knowing either way.
But what troubles me is someone's immediate capability to attack and verbally abuse people(s) they have never met, experienced, or understood. We are all blessed with the freedom of speech, and so am I. But don't you ever wonder how people can suddenly have so much hate. It couldn't just appear from thin air. It had to be present, waiting to be pressurized and ultimately released.

I wonder what we are teaching the youth and persons of our "Great America." I am blessed to be born here in a nation where I can choose my religion just as freely as my salad toppings. However, I don't use it as lightly as some. Please understand I don't see myself above these people; we all pass judgements on those we know nothing about. I, myself, included. I just wonder, though: why? Is it because as a woman I have been taught to scrutinize every other woman and make comparisons to myself? That's another topic entirely, I digress.

Think about it. How much time during a single day do you spend in front of a mirror, thinking of yourself, talking yourself up, wondering and worrying what others think of you?? These are important questions we don't ask ourselves enough. Why do we care only about ourselves? It doesn't just pertain to singular selfishness. We consider ourselves (the USA) the best. We worry what people think of us. So we keep up appearances wonderfully.

If America is number one but doesn't stop to help the handicapped up who have fallen, what are we king of? The answer is a garbage pile.

If we don't help the world become better, we are not better. It should not be selfishness and greed that propels us; but love, equality, peace and companionship.
I know not many people think the same way I do. But imagine the possibilities if they could. I'm not just a hippie with a dream. I'm a doer.

What have you chosen to be that portrays your soul without words?

my answers

(Kenny Kim photography)

Lately all I have been able to listen to is Brooke Fraser's new cd Flags.
If you haven't heard [of] her, I suggest you listen, and learn about her.
She is amazing; so human it's incredible, so inspiring.
Sometimes in our lives we need some kind of pick-me-up.
For me that has always been found in music. I have never heard anything more real
in all of my years of music. For me this album has been exactly what
I needed. Things have been so difficult lately and it's so comforting
to know there are still so many amazing things in this corrupt world.
I know this seems to be a lot to put on one album, but honestly: it can
stand up for it.
In this absurd time of my life, I am starting to find solace. Big time.

So thanks, Brooke Fraser (Litgerwood). Thank you for being honest,
real, creative, inspiring, amazing, caring, and exactly what I needed.

apathetic eagerness.

..I just feel like a lot of shit is fucked up right now, about a lot. Ive been having weird dreams lately. The other night my house was burning, but only under the floorboards, and I could see it, it just flamed, but didnt spread. And 911 was trying to talk to me about my grades..wtf? Ive been watching The Big Lebowski lately (therefore my mind has been on white russians), and last night I dreamt I took the end of a milk jug and just poured in vodka and kahlua, mixed it, and just walked around drinking out of the milk jug: interesting. That fire one seriously messed with my sleep though..I just laughed at myself when I realized Id been dreaming about being a glorified version of The Dude.

Wouldn't that be sweet though, to be a taoist/buddhist/partial nihilist. Yeah, if we could afford that. Its always "get a career with JOB SECURITY" "be a lawyer, be a nurse" "where will that class get you?" "you're taking philosophy, why, again?" Well: Fuck. That. Next semester I have Rel 300: archeology of Israel, Women in Gender Studies, and Phl 150: World Traditions. Im really looking forward to it, all together. The Rel 300 class will give me the opportunity to go to Israel next summer for 3 weeks and do an archeological dig, and world traditions is self explanatory, an overview of religions and traditions. The worst thing to me is that the Atheists know more about religion than anyone, generally speaking for the masses. How can you speak passionately about your religion and explain the differences when you know nothing of another religion. The prof is the same one I have now for philosophy, he's pretty awesome, I cant lie. The class is full but he invited me to come anyway.

Why is it never about passion anymore. We've all become fucking Zombies. We obey without questioning and using the very brains our creator gave us! We're zombies and we're going to breed zombies: its pathetic! I have a passion for knowledge. I dont give a fuck about a lot of things, but I do care about bettering my brain, using my knowledge, and expanding my intellect. When did we stop trying? When did we say that mediocre is acceptable, let alone desired!
It's like we're enthusiastic about going nowhere. Someone else will take care of that, right? No they fucking wont, so do it! Get off your ass and do something with your mind, your good will, and your reason. For as Kant says, that is your personhood. USE IT, dammit.

Phases of Life

This is my absolutely beautiful sister with my absolutely beautiful nephew/godson. He is amazing and makes every day more precious than the last. I can't believe how big they get to quick. You think he's just as normal as ever, and you can tell they have grown..but looking back on newborn pictures: it's so indescribable to see how they have changed.

creating

I've been doing so much work lately, mainly math, that I've had no time to create. So I started writing tonight, it's got potential (if you ask me) to become a good song. I also have more canvases, awaiting paint. I want to try something new, I've never worked with oils before. I'm also busy putting together my portfolio for an upcoming viewing. I'm meeting a woman who worked with Ansel Adams and Deborah Remington. She's a friend of my aunts and wants to see my work. (Needless to say I'm pretty excited..)
Anyway, math ends the day before my summer job begins, no break there either. Sweet. Moving on-it's really okay to have a lot going on. Along with the fact that I'm moving in late May/early June. Packing boxes while I'm studying math and recording songs. They should photograph that.

But hey, I'm alive. And I'm loving it.

For we, we are not long here. Our time is but a breath, so we better breathe it. And I, I was made to live, I was made to love, I was made to know you. -Brooke Fraser

benvenuti alla luce

>this is my new tattoo: and spelled WRONG! awesome. i gave the guy the right thing and he transferred it wrong. i love my life. so i go back in two weeks to get it fixed.

This is the next song I'm going to record.

Hope Now by Addison Road

If everything comes down to love
Then just what am I afraid of
When I call out Your name
Something inside awakes in my soul
How quickly I forget I'm Yours

I'm not my own
I've been carried by You
All my life
Everything rides on hope now
Everything rides on faith somehow
When the world has broken me down
Your love sets me free
When my life is like a storm
Rising waters all I want is the shore
You say I'll be ok
Make it through the rain
You are my shelter my from the storm
Everything rides on hope now
Everything rides on faith somehow
When the world has broken me down
Your love sets me free
I am not my own
I've been carried by you all my life

Everything rides on hope now
Everything rides on faith somehow
When the world has broken me down
Your love sets me free
Everything rides on hope now
Everything rides on faith somehow
When the world has broken me down
This love sets me free
You've become my hearts desires
I will sing Your praises higher
Your love sets me free
(Your love sets me free)
Your love sets me free
(You love sets me free)
Your love sets me free

newfound loves

Now-running has never been easy as pie for me. I have curves and boobs these does not make anything in life easier (sometimes haha). Even though I am not as thin as I once was, I am still comfortable in my skin. I like who I am, and I don't think my body style is what decidedly determines me.
Today I was stifling through this "big world-o'-Blogger" and stumbled upon the blog of a runner. He had recently been on TV discussing his interesting life of "Barefoot Running." He and a friend described the difference of running in 'old-school' tennis shoes: the ones with huge soles and macho support, and running in minimal soled shoes, FiveFingers, and..get this: BAREFOOT.
I'm a lover of new and old. But this is so new to me. So, I started to think about it. We are the ones who assume we need such support and as the woman said we have degraded our foot muscles. We've made them depend on these macho-soled shoes to get them through. And as the man mentioned about a book: there are indians who run about 40-50 miles a day, a day!, in flat sandal-looking 'shoes.'

I'm a daily rocker of Vans classic flat footed checkered slip-ons :) so this support thing is far from me. Every time ran I had sore feet from the Nike tennis shoes I would wear while running, my legs hurt and I felt exhausted and heavy.
After reading and viewing this man's blog and the news broadcast about his phenomenon, I chucked my Nikes, grabbed my minimal New Balances and was out the door. I took his advice of not landing so hard by slamming on my heels and instead on the balls of my feet. I felt a spring in my step, my stride was smooth. I felt lighter and stronger than ever before on a run. Instead of feeling drained and sore, I feel invigorated and determined. I have been looking for a fix for this for so long and did not know where to turn. I finally got my answer in a happen-chance. How nice, right?

If you'd like to see more on this barefoot running check out the blog: Enjoy!

about that..

I'm not one of those people who runs around telling the world about everything Right when it happens, or ever: my choice. I just don't see the sense in assuming and getting all worked up, maybe someone will tell you something when they're ready. Try that on for size.

I need a vacation. I need a beach. I think my mom and I are going to take a vacation soon, just us. I think that'd be perfect. I wonder where we'll end up going..I know it'll be a beach thats for sure. I hope it's Wrightsville Beach.

...and you are?

I think we just need to appreciate more of who we are and stop trying to fight it. That makes you miserable, trust me I've been there. Embracing who you are is what will make you truly happy. I've learned to stop caring about what other people think of me. What do you think of yourself? That's the important question.

In-dependence

The other day I was driving home from work and noticed the red light of a traffic signal was out. It got me thinking, as does everything: Sometimes we may be just like that red light: waiting for someone to come change and restore us.
I fear that this is common for people. Let's say something traumatic happens in your life, it effects you (even if you pretend it doesn't, that pretending will eventually effect you, and it came from the trauma, therefore there is no escaping it and any way you look at it, it effects you). Now, guaranteed none of us would like to admit this, but it's true.
First of all we try and push things back in our minds and not let them bother us or change us; hinder the way we live day to day. The fact of the matter is that by trying to push this said problem down we are only going to cause a major breakdown later. Sometimes we occupy our minds with other things, other people, to avoid coming face-to-face with our dilemma, however in most instances this will only make it seem easier, and make it seem to other people that you are doing exactly that. Your true friends can see straight through your facade, and a lot of times, this is exactly what we need. We need a friend to remind us that it's okay to be sad, angry; basically just emotional, we're human! but the point is that we cannot just pretend things don't happen or try to find a way around facing things. I think the hardest thing to do is come to terms with our traumas by dealing with it day by day. We need to lean on those true friends, they are how we make it through. But the biggest thing is finding yourself again after the storm; searching for and picking up all the pieces of you and putting them back together. This most likely will not become the same puzzle that you were before, this will have modifications and tiny nicks in the edges, and, as hard as it is to believe: there will most likely not be any holes in this new puzzle of you. It's scary to think we won't be the same, but we need to realize that learning and growing are necessary; and those few chips in your corners, or nicks in your paint: they can heal, and they can expand, and they can eventually make a shiny new portrait out of you.
Secondly, on point from above: stop waiting around for someone/something that will miraculously come and POOF! you'll be fixed. Sorry Charlie, not gonna happen. We need to rely more on ourselves, have more trust in ourselves and, like I said following picking up our puzzle pieces, realize that we are so much stronger because of this disaster. A lot of people just want miracles, they want miracles to find them and fix them. Although this is a nice fairy tale feeling, odds are that's the only place you'll find it: fairy tales. Considering we live in reality (hate to break it to you), the probability of this said miracle finding us is unlikely. I think if we so badly want one, maybe we need to get off our asses and find one. Stop waiting around, this will get you nowhere. You need to embrace life and not waste any of it.
Lastly, sometimes all you need is some good ol' fashion 'upgrades'. Being a girl, I can tell you that a new haircut, and in my case a new piercing (nose), can do you wonders. Now, I can't tell you if this will work for pulling a guy out of a slump, but I know for a fact that every woman knows what it feels like to have that great feeling after a great new haircut. Silly, I'm aware, but in any matter, true.
I'm certainly not saying that it isn't difficult to do these things (well, not the haircut, for all of us), trust me, I know how hard it is to even get the motivation to start finding those pieces, let alone putting them back together. It takes a long time, and so it should: healing takes a long time. That awful storm will stick in your mind for a long time, and replay over and over again. But, thankfully, this doesn't have to last forever.
Sometimes the hardest thing to do is actually start to help yourself out of this mess. It's so easy for me to stay in bed all day and only get up because I have to go to work because I don't want to get fired, come home and go right back to bed. You think you know how you'll be after something happens and you may be completely wrong. I can say all I want that I haven't been through a crap-storm and back, but I have. And it's so easy to meet someone new and get caught up in that, but then realize that those bad memories never leave, they're just under the surface, waiting to remind you. So you put up your guard again, and push away because you're scared. Well, I have to tell myself that fear is okay. Brave the unknown and maybe that's where you'll find those new pieces of yourself; the new ones that will mingle with the old ones and make you who you are.

So stop fearing and just jump already, I promise you'll enjoy it.

mistakes we knew we were making

I think I've needed a huge "welcome back" to myself...
As everyone has, I've made mistakes in my life. But have you ever wondered if/when those mistakes become deliberate? Think about it: we make mistakes and claim we learn from them, then make the same, or relatively close to the same, mistake again. Do we realize this? Maybe we do subconsciously and don't want to admit it to ourselves; thinking we'll recognize it the next time and stop ourselves from letting it happen. Maybe we want it to happen..? Although I don't know who would yearn to feel the way I do after realizing I've made a mistake. Is any of this making sense? Maybe not. I just know that I can't keep living my life without my voice being the one that leads it. I want to be heard and listened to and understood. As Socrates' says, "an unexamined life is not worth living" it's a waste; you need to reach, you need to be a part of your own life: every person should be the lead role in their own life.
Now, I'm not saying other people are not important, but you have to remember that you are the most important. And I'm not saying to be selfish, just remember who you are, and don't let go of that. Completely opposite to that: the people in your life that influence you, help you, and are always there for you are extremely important. And in turn it is always important to help a person you love. In time of need and not. Always. I friend is a friend.
Lately, I've been forgetting who I am, and I need that back. It's a feeling that is completely indescribable when you feel constrained; like your wings have been clipped.
I am taking back the reigns in my life and feeling great about it. It's so important to be you.

As I have mentioned before, the relationships in your life are crucial.
I could attempt to wrap this up in a pretty bow for you but not a lot happens that easily.
The ugly truth is that people will come and go in your life and although difficult and may take some time, you have to determine who is good for you; who will benefit your life as you can do for them. While it may be difficult to understand, it is necessary to continue to be happy. Happiness is the final goal. There are things you do and steps you take that lead to other steps that make you happy, but you being happy is not a step you take for something else. Happiness. Your best friend, forever.

Love, right?

Meet Guilia. She's from Italy; came here as a foreign exchange student during my senior year of high school. We became really good friends and she left sooner than expected. We still keep in touch and I'm hopefully going to visit her this summer in Italy. I took this photo for an assignment in photography senior year. It was so fun; she held nothing back. We used to have a great time together and I'm so excited I may see her!
Going back to the acquaintances thing... because i just keep thinking about how important it is. I can't really explain it. I just really think people need to be more open and caring and understanding. I really think we don't have enough love. And that's the most important thing. LOVE IS ALL YOU NEED. Right? I think I do believe that.. I mean I've always wondered who I'm going to end up with or what job I'm going to have and where I'm going to live when i grow up and start a life. I just think the most important thing in that is love. If I find the someone who loves me and knows me and I love and am soulfully happy with, I'll be fine. My job won't entirely matter, and the money won't be most crucial. I just think love is what will make or break you.
Have it, and know it. 'Cuz if you don't, you're gonna have some problems.. :)

the love blues

Alright so it's Valentine's Day and you're probably thinking one of two things.. 1. F#@% this stupid holiday, I have no one to spend it with. OR 2. I'm so happy I have my baby to spend today with.

But, really.. it's a pointless holiday. Women think it's only about chocolate and jewelry and flowers. Out of those I'll take the flowers, maybe. It's become such a day of marketing and advertisement because men think all their girls want are things to show off to their friends.
I think we miss the point completely.. It's not about what you can buy your significant other. It's just a day to remember to appreciate that you have them. I guess I'm just not one for chocolate and candy hearts. I love getting flowers but that's just because they smell great and I love the way they look in the house. I really just think the biggest thing is to delve into your relationship. I mean, you should be thankful everyday. But all those days you don't get to see each other, they don't matter on Valentine's Day. It's just about being with the someone you happened to be lucky enough to share mutual interest with in this never-ending sea of people in the world.
I think we try too hard in general. I think we don't appreciate the things we have as much as we should. And that's not a god way to live. I don't want to be mad about the bad things that have happened in my life when I can relive all the good things in my mind.
In any case: I think everyone should have a good day today. It's not all about one significant other when we have to many people in our lives that love and care for us.

Influences

Have you ever met someone and you immediately know they will change your life forever?
I have met so many people in my life. And it's easy to see who will mean a lot. You have to notice the acquaintances you make. Whether its someone you hit it off with right away, or someone you had to grow to know, it doesn't matter. I think we take advantage of the people we meet. We no longer take the time to get to know people anymore. I think we've become selfish. We don't want to take the time make people more than acquaintances because we don't want to feel obliged to be there for someone, or send a birthday card, or go out to dinner.. It's so important to have 'face time'; to interact with people.

This is it.

So, my mom's 50th birthday was recently. It made me think: that could potentially be the middle of her life. I mean, chances are she's already half way through the way our family goes, but still... it makes you think. I realize how young I am, and that I still have so much of my life to live. Thinking about my future makes me slightly nervous. There are so many things I want to do, and who knows if ill ever achieve them. It just makes me wonder: when do things begin to count? We always say, "I want to do this, I want to do that.. etc." I just wonder when we start to consider the things we've previously done as part of our lives? I look back on some of the things I've done in my life and I think, "Wow, that was amazing. I can't believe I did that, it feels like another lifetime!" Is it when we become adults, or when we begin to achieve the things we always had on our 'to-do in life' list? I just don't want to wake up one morning and realize I've spent my entire life waiting for it to begin. What if this is it? This is where the beginning starts and we have to embrace everything from here on out. I want to do so many things and although I do plan on doing then at some point, I want to make sure I don't waste my time in between now and then. I don't want to disregard the pre-years as if I'm just spending them waiting. I don't want to wait. What is there to wait for!? I want a family at some point; a loving husband and some little munchkins running around. I might dream of that until it happens but I'm not going to ignore any man that may not be suitable for that role in my life. I want experience things. I want to look back and know that I enjoyed my years of sorrow as well as joy.
I feel like I have done so much yet nothing all together. I want to do something with my life, I want to know by the time that I'm on my death bed that I made a difference in someone's life.

Have you?

what matters

Right now I'm in between classes, sitting here observing and listening to music.
So my job for the past 6 years has been for Parks and Recreation, working with kids as a leader during the summer playground program. I like kids a lot, and I also teach gymnastics through P&R which I enjoy. So for a long time I have known that nursing is what i want to do with my life, but I was having such a difficult time deciding what field to go into. The other day I was at work; enjoying the overall splendor of little kids running around playing during the Parent-tot class and I couldn't stop smiling. And right at that moment, it hit me like 50 light bulbs: I want to work with kids.. so maybe I'll work in pediatrics and double major in early childhood developmental psychology. I'd like to work in the cancer ward for a children's hospital. I know it will be tough but I realized that that doesn't really matter...
What matters is that I go home from work everyday knowing that I did everything I could to make that child's time less painful and happier while they were still here.
